    • WRITING PROMPTS

      WRITING PROMPT 1:

Let’s write about it! How much have you grown this past year as a person? Write a pantoum about your growth from the perspective of the body.

      What is a pantoum?

The pantoum is a poem of any length, composed of four-line stanzas in which the second and fourth lines of each stanza serve as the first and third lines of the next stanza. The last line of a pantoum is often the same as the first.

      WRITING PROMPT 2:

Let’s write about it! Some of us have been on dating apps and have read a few profiles that describe in detail their physical traits vs. their personality, hobbies, interests, etc.Let’s create a dating profile. Write a list poem describing yourself without listing any of your physical traits.

      What is a list poem?

An inventory of people, places, things, or ideas organized in a special way.

      WRITING PROMPT 3:

Let’s write about it! Whether from your family, friends, girl/boy friends, husbands or wives, we’ve all experienced heartbreak. Write a poem about that heartbreak from the perspective of walking through a haunted house incorporating these eight words:

      Possessed

      Altar

      Cross

      Sage

      Cobwebs

      Shadows

      Poltergeist

      Conjure

      WRITING PROMPT 4:

Let’s write about it! God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference.

Write a poem from the perspective of you being the answer to your prayer when moving forward from a painful place.

      WRITING PROMPT 5:

Let’s write about it! I am a Janet Jackson fan! My favorite album is ‘Velvet Rope’ and one of my favorite songs is ‘What About’ where she confesses being a victim of Intimate Partner Violence and how she was violated.

Write a letter to the person who violated you the most. Tell them how you really feel. Let them know what they have done. Tell them the lines they have crossed and how you lost trust in them.

      WRITING PROMPT 6:

Let’s write about. Regret a feeling of sadness, repentance, or disappointment over something that has happened or been done. Write an abecedarian (pronounce ABC Darian) poem acknowledging your regrets so you can dissolve them.

      What is an abecedarian poem?

A poem in which the first letter of each line or stanza follows sequentially through the alphabet.
